The Basketball Academy is for post 16 students who have an interest in playing basketball on a regular basis within the British Colleges league. At the moment every Wednesday is a ‘day of Basketball’ where students that are selected for the team will play fixtures against Colleges all over the
West Midlands. Alongside the academy students will study a BTEC Level 3 in Sport, AS PE, Sports Science and many more courses the school has to offer.
By having the extra basketball training and playing opportunities, students can develop their knowledge and understanding of the sport as well as developing their skills to allow them to progress onto university or into a possible career as a player, a coach or even a teacher.
Facilities and basketball Kit
As a basketball academy we have numerous training facilities available for the players to receive the best coaching and allow them to enjoy their experience with us we have a purpose built fitness suite (academy players can use this facility to train in their own time), sports hall and gymnasium. PE classrooms are available, fitted with computers, printers and a projector for theory based activities. All students are expected to purchase an OLSC 6th kit and basketball academy match-day kit will be provided for players.
Aims
As a basketball academy we aim to achieve success:
All students passing their A levels or Btec Level 3 course with a merit or above. To develop students as players and coaches, and to encourage students to regularly attend basketball sessions within school and out of school. Opportunities to visit universities and to give students opportunities to perform in school and out of school. Also to liaise with other schools/college’s/universities in the area and to work closely with the other OLSC academies: dance and football. There is also opportunity to develop leadership and coaching skills working with younger students at OLSC and local primary schools.
How to be part of OLSC Basketball Academy
To be a part of the basketball academy you need to have a passion for basketball, showing commitment, organisation and be prepared to study alongside training. Previous basketball experience isn’t a necessity but you must have enthusiasm to learn and train and ‘to never give up when the going gets tough’. Students must also be prepared to put in extra hours if needed for extra training sessions.
